Varallo

from my lens

For the very first article on my blog, I’ve chosen to write about Varallo — the place where I grew up and the one that will always have a special place in my heart. Varallo is more than just a town. It’s a blend of history, art, faith, and nature, nestled in the mountains of northern Italy. Every corner tells a story, every street carries a memory.

Walking through its quiet alleys, I’m always struck by how seamlessly sacred architecture coexists with natural beauty — from the majestic Sacro Monte to the colorful façades and peaceful river views.

The Ponte de Varade

I want to start from my home — and I’m not joking. Varallo’s history officially begins with a document from the year 1025 (yes, a thousand years ago!), when the king granted the territory, including what was called "Il Ponte di Varade." That very bridge holds a special place in my heart. I think some of the most important encounters in my life happened right there. It’s also the starting point for many of the town’s musical parades — a place where stories, memories, and celebrations come to life.

The Sesia river

During summer afternoons, I love swimming in the Sesia River — the river that flows through and gives its name to my valley: Valsesia. Here’s a photo I took a few days ago while walking through the countryside.

The historical centre

The historic center is the heart of many traditions and events held throughout the year.
In this photo I took two years ago, you can see the side of the Biblioteca Farinone Centa, also known as Palazzo Racchetti.

The Allea

On spring afternoons, I love walking through Varallo, especially along the Allea — a beautiful tree-lined avenue where you can admire stunning Liberty-style houses: Durio, Barbara, and Virginia. These elegant villas were originally built to host some of the most influential families in Varallo during the early 20th century. Today, they serve as administrative offices for the town.

The little streets

Varallo is full of small streets that speak of a distant past, rich in culture and tradition.
I took this photo in front of the Madonna della Neve Church, located in Mantegna — a little corner of Varallo that I truly love. It holds many memories for me, especially moments shared with families and children during meaningful experiences.

The Sacred Mountain

I thought I knew everything about the story of the Sacred Mountain when I was just five years old.
To me, it's one of the most artistic places I’ve ever visited — and one that I love deeply.
I took this photo of the Basilica, built with marble from Parone, the same type of marble used for the Duomo in Milan.

A view on the west!

When I walk through the streets of Varallo, I love to pause for a moment in front of this peaceful view, seen from the Madonna del Cuore Church, looking toward the old part of town. I find it beautiful to gaze westward — toward the past — and draw inspiration for the future.
